Table tennis is a sport played by millions of people all over the world. Families and friends play in basements and garages, while people at schools, churches, normzplumbing and community centers gather for impromptu pickup games. World-class athletes compete in tournaments around the world, and at the ultimate level, the Olympic Games. The concept originated in England and was formally introduced in the United States as “Ping Pong” after a company named Parker Brothers purchased the rights to market their indoor tennis game under that name. Their exclusive rights to the name “Ping Pong” placed the game out of reach for some people because Ping Pong brand equipment was rather expensive. Other manufacturers soon began to market equipment labelled for “table tennis” and the sport continued to grow.
According to USA Table Tennis (USATT), the national organizing body for table tennis in the United States, there are more than 8000 registered players in the country. USATT regulates more than 240 clubs across the United States and sanctions over 300 tournaments each year. Two of the largest competitions are The U.S. Open and U.S. Nationals. USATT also oversees the USA National Teams, including the USA Olympic team, Pan Am Teams, USA Men’s, Women’s, Junior, and Cadet National teams. These teams compete in both national and international tournaments. They train in the United States and abroad.
Serious competitors have many options for tournament play in the United States. Every region in the USA has sanctioned tournaments. In addition to the U.S. Open and the U.S. Nationals, a few of the larger tournaments include the North American Nationals Team Championships – held annually since 1998, the Eastern Open – held since 1930 and considered the “Grand Old Lady” of the sport, tennis class Singapore the San Diego Open — held at Balboa Park Activity Center which has been called the “single best table tennis facility in America”, and the New York City Open – one of the newest tournaments which was organized with the intention of becoming an annual event benefiting the American Youth Table Tennis Organization.
Team USA is ranked 43rd in the world. Several of our players have established themselves as top ranking world players. Our top female player, Jun Gao, is currently 30th in the world rankings. She has been playing table tennis since she was five and attended one of the best athletic schools in China to train as a table tennis athlete. In 1994 – 95 she was ranked 3rd in the world. She was born in China but has since become a U.S. resident. She helped earn a silver medal for China at the 1992 Olympics and continues to compete at a high level. A new generation of table tennis players is beginning to take over the top ranks. The USA has seven world ranked players under the age of 15. One of the most talked about and watched players is Lily Zhang. She became a USA Women’s Team member at just 12 years old. She is currently ranked as one of the top 50 players in the world, in the under 15 category, and is ranked among the top ten players in the United States. She holds the title of national champion in both the cadet and junior ranks. Her coaches believe she has a natural gift for the game and anticipate her becoming an Olympic champion.
